Pilates helps students build core strength and develop proper body alignment, flexibility, balance, and fluidity. Students also learn to incorporate breath and mental focus into their practice. Midwood Pilates instructor Becky Tin enjoys creating sequences that reinforce basic alignment principles while challenging students to move beyond their comfort zones. While Pilates principles supply the foundation, Becky sometimes reaches to other genres of movement such as Tai Chi or Yoga, adding a creative touch to her Pilates sequencing.
Created by Joseph Pilates, the Reformer has been used for decades to help students elongate their spine while fostering core strength, stability and coordination. Exercises can be adapted to assist with rehab from surgery and to accommodate pregnancy, aging joints or disability. Similarly, practices can be intensified on the Reformer to build hard core strength and endurance. Did you know that you can engage in low impact, aerobic jumping while lying on the Reformer? It's fun and energizing!
Becky enjoys teaching Flow Slow & Stretch Yoga where the focus is on breath, alignment, fluid movement, and static holds. The practice is accompanied by music and ends with stretching and meditation. She also offers Yin Yoga in a dim-lit studio where students find stillness as they give in to the pull of gravity in various reclining or seated postures. The practice of Yin helps to stretch and loosen hardened fascia and lubricate joints so that the body can work towards more optimal alignment.
As a child, Becky started hanging upside down and climbing trees as soon as she could walk. Her passion for using her body led her to pursue a career in gymnastics, competing through high school and then for Cornell University's Big Red Varsity Gymnastics Team.
After graduating from Harvard Law School, Becky became a civil rights attorney and then district court judge in her hometown of Charlotte, NC. But the practice of law did not get in the way of Becky using her body. She has been an avid Yoga and Pilates practitioner since the late 1990s. Becky has studied under Melissa Pope at Alternative Fitness Pilates for the past 20 years. She completed a 200-hr Yoga certification program with Sarah Faircloth in 2011 followed by a 300-hr Pilates Instructor certification program with Jenn Gianni at Fusion Pilates in Asheville. Becky has been teaching ever since.
With much help from her husband, Becky built Midwood Pilates in her basement and began a trial run of the business in early 2016. She taught sessions in the early mornings, evenings and on weekends. She soon realized that her soul was clamoring for a change after 28 years in the law. So Becky decided to declare 2019 as the year when she would begin focusing full time on perfecting the art of teaching. In addition to Midwood Pilates, Becky teaches group classes at Alternative Fitness in the Cotswold neighborhood.
Feel free to contact Becky to schedule a private or small group session with friends at Midwood Pilates.
Sessions last from 60-75-minutes. Private sessions are $45; semi-private sessions are $30/person for two students and $20/person for three students. Classes can be conducted virtually or on the outdoor covered studio. Becky can only accommodate private sessions in the basement studio due to Coronavirus concerns.
